Handy Harvester

Harvesting flowers is one of the most
important parts of the whole growing process. Cutting for quality,
colour scheme, an eye to continuity and the customer’s needs are all
constantly being juggled in the picker’s brain, alongside the
quantity of stems required. That’s why I try my hardest not to get
too involved myself…

As we have grown, the flowers have got further and further away! It is certainly not always practical to pick into water and so armfuls of flowers are often carried back, especially tall stems. Dreams of expensive quad bikes, utility vehicles and Piaggio ‘cafe’ style scooter trucks have remained just extravagant whimsy. We do manage with a ride-on and trailer but it’s often doing other duties.

And so, Arjen came to the rescue with
his plans for a harvesting trolley in his flower handbook. In the end
I didn’t fancy his two small-wheeled version, although the narrow
profile is necessary to squeeze along picking paths (that never seem
big enough!). And so I cannibalized an old wheelbarrow that was
falling apart in the winter, to save me some time and to make the
trolley more manoeuvrable.

Add a few old bits of greenhouse, some windbreak netting and we have a very light trolley, ready for piles and piles of stems.  Still a work in progress though I
admit…..

A Rockin’ Rapunzel

Rapunzel - 044

We were recently
invited by Shannon Lee Robinson of SLR photography to participate in a fantasy bride shoot. I immediately liked the idea, it was something a bit
different and sounded fun.

Rapunzel - 010
Shannon had teamed up with stylist Georgina Webb of Ruby
Weddings and between them they wanted to create a photo series of “fairy tale
weddings”. I knew I’d want to be involved in the Rapunzel shoot,  partly because we’ve been doing so
many hair flowers recently and partly because my 4yr old daughter adores
anything Rapunzel.

Rapunzel - 023

I had so many ideas: huge climbing roses twisted around
brambles, clematis growing through chandeliers, an abundant flower fascinator with jasmine tumbling down and winding around a long plait….of course I had to rein myself in, largely down to the usual constraints of  budget & time but also the lack of flowers due to challenging growing
conditions*

Another curve ball was life got in the way of me going on
the shoot* so I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw the photographs. Today I
received my disc of nearly 400 images and here are a few of them. Hope
you like them as much as I do. I’m thrilled….but how do I choose which ones to use, they're all lovely.
