Cephalaria gigantea – Giant Scabious
Tall, clump-forming perennial, with attractive pinnate foliage and bearing in early summer, on very tall stems, large, scabious-like creamy yellow flowers. The large, pincushion-like, yellow flowers are borne on long, wiry stems above bushy clumps of dark green leaves. The blooms are a fine nectar source for both butterflies and bees and it is a good choice for naturalising in ‘wild’ gardens.
Cephalaria is a trouble-free hardy perennial which flowers for the first time in the year after sowing and in subsequent summers. It does well in a wide range of moderately fertile. moisture-retentive soils, including clays which may be liable to compaction. A position in full sun will give the best results.
Germinates in 2 to 3 weeks at 18 to 21°C with compost kept kept slightly moist but not wet. Avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing.
